Can LGBT couples adopt in Alaska?

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Unfortunately, not all adoption agencies in Alaska will consider LGBT people as good parental candidates to adopt. They often cite religious beliefs to discriminate against someone who wishes to adopt. However, if you are determined to adopt, there are public resources available to help you help others.

What are LGBT Alaska adoption laws?

Although the adoption process can test anyone’s patience, opening your heart and home to a child in need is its own reward. To serve children in need, Alaska’s adoption laws state the following:

  • LGBT couples can adopt.
  • LGBT individuals can adopt.
  • LGBT individuals may be able to adopt their spouse’s biological child.

Sometimes, LGBT issues complicate adoptions. However, there are many adoption agencies that welcome any eligible candidate. Together you can explore your options and find out how to strengthen your application.

How will I know if the adoption agency welcomes LGBT couples?

The Human Rights Campaign maintains a database of adoption and foster care agencies that support the unique needs of LGBT families. In May 2019, they will release their updated interactive map that lists helpful links to Alaska-specific agencies and resources.

When researching adoption agencies, you may want to keep the following in mind:

  • On their website, does their mission statement include LGBT individuals?
  • Does the agency forbid discrimination against individuals based on “sexual orientation or gender identity”?
  • Are there images or stories of families involving LGBT individuals or couples?
  • Can the agency provide paperwork with LGBT inclusive language? (i.e. Do they only use gendered terms such as “the mother and father”?)

If you would like to adopt but are concerned about your rights as an LGBT individual, you may want to explore your legal options. This could help you expedite the adoption process and find the perfect fit.
